The participation of Rapinoe at the FIFA Women's World Cup began in 2011. The contributions of Rapinoe helped to help the U.S. Women's World Cup to take home two titles in 2019 and 2015. In 2018 she became cocaptain of the team. In the 2020 Olympics at Tokyo Japan was delayed until 2021 because of COVID-19 epidemic. Rapinoe scored two goals during the bronze medal match as she helped the United States defeated Australia by a score of 4-3.
